All the Borgani's have basically the same body, with a particular bell design. I never tried a modern Orsi, I know they make saxophones by request: Jan Garbarek use an Orsi curved soprano.īorgani became popular when Joe Lovano started to use a Borgani, Borgani "Joe Lovano" model. Orsi's old saxophones was made for marching band. The old Grassi Professional 2000 are like Mark VI, they were made in Italy, some of those horns played very well! but here in Italy a Grassi TS460 costs almost half a Mauriat 76. The Taiwan Grassi's looks very similar to the Mauriat System 76, I think they are the the same horn. The modern Grassi's are made in Taiwan (400 and 460 series, maybe also 360 series), the lower budget are made in China (200 and 20S series). IMO if someone is claiming one of the companies is simply better than the others then they are either assuming based on a very small sample they tried and/or unable to seperate objectively comparing the saxophones with their own subjective taste.

BTW all Borganis and R&Cs I've tried were relatively new ones from the last few years. Turned out just that one sax with that specific neck was a problem for me, all others weren't. For example if I stopped trying them after the first one, with just one neck, I would think they are terrible. Some necks played a lot better for me than others (also depended on the sax I tried them with). R&C also make different necks with different bores, curves and octave vent sizes. Same for Borgani pretty much, though I think they are a bit more consistent. I really liked one R&C sax especially but another of the same model, not so much. I can't really say one is better than the other, they feel a little different and you have to try. They can vary a lot actually though the basic tone and feel is mostly similar.

All would vary between the different saxophones (even same model). I just couldn't get over the mechanics which I thought had pretty awful design (not the feel in the fingers, the linkages, etc.). Some people like them, the ones I tried had a decent tone. I have tried all the other three Italian saxophones, several of each. From Orsi I only tried clarinets, not saxophones.
